A Bluffdale man was killed early Friday when he rear-ended a dump truck on I-15.

Killed was: David Nypower, 59.

A passenger, Alice Clark, 56, of Tooele received minor injuries and was taken to Mountain View Hospital.

Nypower was headed north on the freeway about 2 miles before entering Utah County, when he crashed into the dump truck hauling scrap metal, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The dump truck was traveling between 50 and 55 mph, but it's unknown how fast Nypower was driving, said UHP spokesman Derek Jensen.

Clark, who was reclined in her seat and wearing a seat belt, may have been asleep at the time of the 2:35 a.m. crash.

The dump truck's driver continued up the freeway about six miles and was stopped by a Payson City police officer when he took the Santaquin exit.

The truck driver was booked into the Juab County Jail on investigation of leaving the scene of an injury accident, no seat belt and three violations: no log book, no safety inspection and no oversize permit, Jensen said.
