TAYLORSVILLE — Salt Lake Community College men's basketball team finished its season with 20-plus wins (27-6, 14-4 SWAC) for the third consecutive season, and for the first time in school history, began the season 13-0 — the Bruins' best start ever.

The team, ranked in the Top 25 all season, finished with its highest ranking ever (No. 12). The Bruins' season ended with a loss in the Region 18 championship against Southern Idaho in Twin Falls, 70-62, keeping them from qualifying for the NJCAA championships for the first time since 1994.

Some of the accomplishments this year include:

First Team All-Region: Rekalin Sims (SWAC Player of the Year, All-American nomination). Sims was named SWAC Player of the Year for the second straight year, the first player who earned the award in two consecutive years since David Anderson (CSI 1990, '91).

Second Team All-Region: Ahmet Tidiane

Honorable Mention All-Region: Bryan Ellis

Region 18 Coach of the Year: Bountiful resident Norm Parrish, his third time (1994, 2000). The Viewmont High alumnus improved his career coaching record to 289-157.

Bruins in record books: Rekalin Sims — rebounds in a season (No. 1: 318); rebounds in a career (No. 1: 279); points in a season (No. 6: 639); points in a career (No. 3: 1,235); 3-point field goals (No. 3); free throws made in a game (No. 1: 13 vs. CSI); free throws made in a career (No. 3: 279). Bryan Ellis — steals in a game (tie No. 3: seven); steals in a season (92). Bret Rubin: 3-point field goals in a season (No. 4: 76).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The Lady Bruins also finished second in the SWAC (23-10, 12-6 SWAC), losing to Southern Idaho in the Region 18 championships 83-71.

Coaching Milestone: The win over Colorado Northwestern in the region tournament gave Betsy Specketer her 200th career win.
