When I go camping with my family, I teach my children the importance of leaving the campsite cleaner than when we arrived. I want them to take pride in their surroundings. Although many people never consider throwing cups, wrappers and other garbage onto the ground, some of those same individuals do not think twice when they flick a cigarette butt onto the pavement as they enter the local shopping center. What makes this acceptable? According to www.cigarettelitter.org, "cigarettes are the most-littered item in America and the world." We should take after Arizona, which has begun issuing tickets to motorists who toss cigarette butts out the window. In Arizona this is a class 3 misdemeanor and carries a fine up to $300. It is time we quit using our streets as an outdoor ashtray.
