Ignoring arts misses the mark

SHARE Ignoring arts misses the mark

It is with some surprise and much dismay I read that Jordan School District is considering eliminating courses in Shakespeare. It appears that the school board's focus is on utility only. Classes that do not "sufficiently advance the state core" or "boost chances for jobs" will be axed. There seems to be no room in schools any longer to advance those qualities that enrich our culture. Must we turn our schools over to the Philistines? Ignoring Shakespeare or any of the more sophisticated and refined arts misses the mark.

Superintendent Barry Newbold's possible support for this cut leads one to ask simply, "Et tu, Brute?"
