Bankruptcy filings in Utah fell to 1,436 filings in July, down from 1,730 filings compared to July 2004, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Utah.

Filings through July 31 were at 11,731, a 5 percent decrease compared with 12,321 filings through the same seventh-month period in 2004.

Nearly three-fourths of July's filings were made under Chapter 7, a provision that sells off assets and erases unsecured debt like credit cards.
