Utah camp notes

Chart talk

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham noted that few alterations have been made to the depth chart. At middle linebacker, senior Grady Marshall and sophomore Joe Jiannoni are now sharing the top spot. At defensive end, junior Soli Lefiti has moved ahead of freshman Pate Moleni as No. 1 at the five-technique spot. At cornerback, freshman Brice McCain is moving into contention for playing time.

"We've got some good battles," Whittingham said. "Those are probably the most noteable right now."

Avoiding 'The Pit'

One of the holdovers of the Urban Meyer era is the infamous "Pit." Instead of standing on the sidelines watching or sitting in the shade sipping lemonade, injured players spend practice time doing a variety of unorthodox exercises — such as pulling or pushing a golf cart, upside down push-ups and lifting chains, tires or rocks.

"We encourage health," Whittingham said earlier in the camp. "Being in 'The Pit' is much more strenuous than practicing. So that's a good motivator to get guys healthy."

The number of newcomers opting not to practice because of various ailments has dropped off significantly as camp progresses.

"They learn very quickly where you don't want to be," Whittingham said.

Not so fast

Redshirt freshman Brent Casteel, who scored a touchdown in Thursday's scrimmage at Rice-Eccles Stadium, took exception to reports that Utah's defense is ahead of the offense in camp.

"The 'D' is doing good," Casteel said after the scrimmage. "The 'D' is holding their own, but the offense is holding its own also. So we're neck-and-neck with that."

Whittingham noted that the offense did come out with a little bit of resolve in Friday's practice.

Extra points

Freshman defensive back Kyler Rushton suffered a knee injury in practice Friday. The extent of the injury was not immediately known . . . The Utes will practice twice today. They'll go from 9:10-11:10 a.m. before taking the field again from 4:05-5:45 p.m. . . . Practices at the Ute Baseball Field remain open to the public.
