Howard Stanley Betenson 1916 ~ 2005 HURRICANE, UTAH - On July 30, 2005, at his home in Hurricane, Howard Stanley Betenson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, left his earthly body, and has graduated to a higher school of learning. Howard was born September 15, 1916, in Cedar City, Utah, to Leland Stanley and Annette Webster Betenson. He married Alice Guire in 1950, and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1958. She preceded him in death. He later married Edna Garrett Sheffield on April 7, 1979. They were sealed in the Ogden Temple in 1984. Raised in Cedar City, Howard attended the local schools, including the BAC, which is now SUU. He joined the National Guard of Utah in 1934. His unit was called into active duty on March 3, 1941. He served his country in the European Theater. He was part of the 3rd Army under General Patton's command during World War II. He served from Utah Beach to Central Europe. Howard received the Bronze Star and recognition for his valor in five different campaigns. He was always a true patriot to his country and proud he had served his country. Howard lived in Bountiful, Utah, after the war, where he became a very active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many ward and stake positions. He served a mission from 1979-81 in North Dakota. He honored his priesthood, loved the Gospel, and had a strong testimony of the truthfulness of the restored Gospel. Later he moved to Hurricane, where he served in the High Priest Group Leadership and was a Family Home Teacher, even though he had lost most of his eyesight. As a young man, Howard dreamed of being able to see the world. He was lucky enough to travel extensively, seeing the Holy Land twice, Greece, and Egypt. He cruised through the Panama Canal, and traveled to Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, and our beautiful United States from sea to shining sea during peace time. During the war, he saw all of Europe and England. Howard is survived by his loving wife, Edna; children, Jessica (Edward) Gomez, Hal Corey (Daryl) Sheffield, Annette (Steve) Spencer; six grandchildren, six great-granddaughters; and his brother, Blaine Betenson. He was preceded in death by his son, Howard Stanley Betenson, Jr., parents, brother, Francis, and sister, Florence.
