VOLLEYBALL: The Cougars open up the 2005 season this weekend on the road as BYU travels to take on the Nevada Wolf Pack. With first-year coach Jason Watson at the helm and a talented collection of returning players and newcomers, the Cougars hope to start the year off with a bang and show why they are the preseason favorite to win the Mountain West title.

Junior middle blocker Lindsy Hartsock, the nation's second-best blockerlast year, headlines a roster featuring six returning starters among 10 returning letterwinners. Two-time All-MWC honoree Lauren Richards Evans is back in the setter spot for her senior year while fellow seniorsLexi Brown Patterson and Kim Wilson, who received 2004 All-MWCrecognition, both return with starting experience. Libero Lindsey Evans and outside hitter Erica Lott, both sophomores, round out the BYU cache of returning starters. Lott and Richards Evans have been named to the2005 Preseason All-MWC team while Hartsock has been selected as thepreseason Co-Player of the Year.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: The Utah Valley State soccer team opens its regular season at noon on Friday when it hosts Weber State. In two exhibition games the Wolverines beat Mesa State 6-1 and lost to BYU 3-0.

This is the third meeting between the two schools. Last year, Weber State beat the Utah Valley State 5-2 in Ogden. Two years ago, the Wolverines beat Weber State 1-0 in an exhibition game at Weber.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Southern Utah's women's soccer team opens the 2005 regular season Sunday as the Thunderbirds travel to Logan to face in-state rival Utah State. Kickoff is slated for noon, at the Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field.

VOLLEYBALL: Utah State's women's volleyball team will begin its 2005 season in Tulsa, Okla., at the Hurricane Invitational hosted by Tulsa University on Friday and Saturday. The Aggies will open the tournament Friday against Fordham before facing Lamar. USU will then play two more matches on Saturday against Texas-Pan American and Tulsa.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Utah State will hold walk-on tryouts for its women's basketball team on Sept. 7 in the HPER building, Gym 213. Tryouts will run from 6-7:30 p.m. and are open only to full-time students with junior or lower class status and who have played high school varsity basketball.
