Why didn't media help out?

Last week as the devastation of Hurricane Katrina unfolded, I started to wonder. NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, FOX and others were all able to get camera crews and reporters to the disaster sites immediately.

We then saw report after report about the deplorable conditions of the survivors and the outcry about the slow response from the government. As we were shown the thousands of people in dire need of food, water and medicine, I wondered why the news outlets weren't distributing water, food and medicine themselves.
