VOLLEYBALL: BYU pulled out an emotional come-from-behind win Saturday over No. 14 Ohio State to take the Buckeye Classic tournament title in a five games. The Cougars won the last three games of the match to begin the season 7-0 for the first time since 1987.

"It's an awesome win for us," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "The team is thrilled. It's what we came out here to do."

Three Cougars were named to the all-tournament team with junior middle blocker Lindsy Hartsock garnering MVP honors. Sophomores Erica Lott and Lindsey Evans were also named all-tournament.

The Cougars will open Mountain West Conference action next weekend at New Mexico on Friday night and at Air Force on Saturday. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.

SOCCER: The BYU women's soccer team (8-0-0) won its eighth game in a row on Saturday, defeating Colgate 2-0. BYU was named champion of the Big Toe Invitational by defeating the Patriots, as well as No. 14 Wisconsin on Friday.

"We did what we needed to do to win tonight," head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. Four Cougars received individual honors, lead by Most Outstanding Offensive Player Jaime Rendich Beck, who scored the game-winning goal against No. 14 Wisconsin and assisted both goals to defeat Colgate. Jessica Harmon, Katie Larkin and Jessica Aquino were also named to the all-tournament team.

The Cougars host No. 11 California on Friday and Eastern Washington on Saturday. Game times are 7 p.m.


SOCCER: Utah suffered its second straight loss of the season, falling to Cal State Fullerton 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in the Four Points University Plaza Arizona Soccer Classic in Tucson.

Utah, which won its first six games and entered the weekend with a No. 25 ranking, also fell to No. 22 Arizona 1-0 in overtime on Friday night.

The Titans (6-2) outshot the Utes 28-7 and had a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks. Ute goalkeeper Ashley Mason made nine saves to keep Utah in the game before Cal State Fullerton scored four goals in the final 24 minutes.

Stacey Thompson accounted for the first goal off a corner kick in the 67 minute. Lauren Welch added the second just less than nine minutes later. Kandace Wilson knocked home the final two goals for the Titans in the 79th and 84th minutes.

Amanda Feigt, Melissa Wayman and Amanda Sanchez had shots on goal for the Utes, all denied by Titan keeper Karen Bardsley.

Utah plays its third consecutive road game at Utah State on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Utes host California next Sunday at 1 p.m. at Ute Field.

Utah Head Coach Rich Manning said, "Cal State Fullerton played a terrific all-around game and was well deserving of the win. But I was certainly disappointed and embarrassed by our performance. We hope to get back to work and position ourselves to play better next week."

Utah Valley

GOLF: The Utah Valley State men's golf team will compete in the Weber State/Utah Invitational today and Tuesday. The tournament will consist of three rounds, with two rounds on Monday and the final round on Tuesday. Weber State co-hosts the tournament with the University of Utah, which will be held at Valley View Golf Course in Layton. Three UVSC women, meanwhile, will compete as individuals in the NAU Mountain Shootout, in Flagstaff, Ariz.
