DRAPER — With Juan Diego's 9-0 win over North Sanpete Thursday afternoon, the Soaring Eagle moved to a perfect 7-0 in Region 8 and are rolling through the competition. Without being seriously challenged for a region title, the question is, just how good is this team?

"I think we match up with the top five teams (in the 3A classification) pretty well," said coach Jamie Schock. "We haven't really been tested in the region, but in the preseason, I think we presented ourselves pretty well."

This game was pretty consistent with how the team has blown through the region. In the first minute, Lexi Phillips fed a through-ball to Kara Vitacca who went in on the keeper one-on-one. She slipped the ball by the rushing goalie to the empty net and an early lead.

Ten minutes later, it was Phillips who dribbled through the defense and fired a shot from inside the penalty area to the corner of the goal. The scoring onslaught continued as the Soaring Eagle got another goal from Kara Vitacca, and then first-half goals from Catherine Turnerdrown, Lindsey Padjen and Heidi Laabs-Johnson for a 6-0 lead.

With that comfortable lead, Juan Diego knew the game was in hand, but there still were valuable lessons to be learned.

"We really tried to work on our pattern of play and our discipline," said Schock. "It is hard to stay disciplined in games like this, so this is a good test to see if we still make good decisions all the way through the game."

Juan Diego did stay focused and stuck to the team's game plan. The Soaring Eagle play their home games on the field-turf in the stadium. The field plays fast and true. Because of the surface, a premium is put on direct passes to the feet of players, and balls sent through to the forwards must be on a diagonal or sent with a deft touch.

"We try to play a passing style to the wings," said Schock. "We know that you have to have short, direct passes. Long balls don't work on this field, you have to have control."

It did not take long for Kara Vitacca to make sure that Juan Diego maintained control in the second half. Just four minutes after it began, she scored her hat trick after centering a corner kick that bent toward the net and in. Sister Taryn Vitacca scored in the 72nd minute after a flip-throw-in from Amy Garbrecht set the ball up in the middle, and Jenna Speare finished the scoring in the 76th minute.

One player that did not score, but had a great impact on all the scoring was midfielder Megan Maldonado.

"She is kind of our quiet warrior," Schock added. "She works so hard out there and gets things started."

Juan Diego may continue with its domination of Region 8, and may not lose a game, but according to sweeper Taryn Vitacca, that will just be a step along the way.

"We want to win state," she said. "We just have to have the heart and the desire to do it."
