Maung Maung (Readers' Forum, Sept. 22) states that "Islam does not teach a doctrine of hate and terror." Yet that is the behavior apparent to many Americans. Besides the hate and terror of Muslim males on 9/11, what about Daniel Pearl and others executed by Muslim males? In 1998, the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed by Muslim males — as were the World Trade Center and Pan Am Flight 103. The cruise ship Achille Lauro was hijacked by Muslim males. In 1983 the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut was blown up. In 1972, at the Munich Olympics, athletes were kidnapped and massacred by Muslim males. Robert Kennedy was shot and killed by a Muslim male.
Are we seeing a pattern here? Is it any wonder that Gov. Mitt Romney and other Americans seem suspicious of Muslims?
