We Americans are shortsighted. We want everything now. When some of us grew up, deferred gratification was pursued. Save for a home. Obtain a high level of education and your options and income will increase.
Today, we have lost the vision that establishing a democracy in a formerly dictator state (Iraq) will eventually improve the lives of millions.
And although Hurricane Katrina was a major natural disaster, we want it fixed now. Newlyweds want all that their parents have accumulated, and they want it today.
I regret the lost virtues of a more disciplined, patient America.
