Vote for NCAA anniversary team

PROVO — Former BYU All-American setter Mariliisa Salmi has been nominated as a candidate for the NCAA Women's Volleyball 25th Anniversary Team, which will be named Oct. 14th.

Fans can vote for the team's six members and one coach by visiting the link below.

"Mariliisa (Salmi) was probably one of the best athletes we have ever had," said former BYU head coach Elaine Michaelis. "She was a great competitor and leader who was very knowledgeable about the offense and how to carry it out. She's done a great job promoting volleyball in her native Finland as well as here."

Salmi, the 1986 Collegiate Volleyball Coaches Association National Player of the Year, was a four-time All-American at BYU who went on to compete for the Finnish National Team. She led the Cougars to the NCAA Regional Finals in each of the three years she played and was twice named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team. Salmi holds the BYU record for aces in a match (9) and is second all-time with 85 assists in a match. She is also third and fourth all-time in single-season assists with 1,668 in 1986 and 1,601 in 1987.

The team, which commemorates the 25th anniversary of NCAA women's volleyball championships this season, will consist of six players and one coach. A total of 28 players and six coaches have been nominated.
