FARMINGTON — The Davis County Health Department has scheduled cancer screening clinics for women throughout October to observe National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Each exam includes a breast exam, Pap test and a free mammogram voucher to those who qualify. A registered nurse, trained and certified by the state, performs all exams. Fees are based on a sliding scale.
"Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in America," said Lewis Garrett, director of the Davis County Health Department. "In fact, one out of nine women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.
"If you're 40 or older and have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months, call today to schedule an appointment," Garrett continued. "More women are getting mammograms to detect breast cancer, and the good news is that breast cancer deaths are on the decline."
Regular mammograms, combined with clinical breast exams by a health-care provider and monthly breast self-examinations are the best means to detect breast cancer early, Garrett said.
