The Salt Lake Stingers closed out the 2005 season with a nine-game winning streak as they defeated the Las Vegas 51s 9-6 on Monday afternoon.
They broke the game open with a five-run eighth, which included a run-scoring single by Casey Smith and a two-run homer by Brian Specht, his third home run of the three-game series.
Jake Woods (3-1) picked up the win for Salt Lake, which equalled the second-highest win total in team history by going 79-65 this season. Las Vegas had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Joel Peralta recorded the save by throwing one pitch and getting Rotsen Gil to ground out to Brandon Wood.
Specht went 4-for-4 to lead the Stingers, while Alberto Callspo singled in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to fifteen games.
The Stingers scored three unearned runs on no hits in the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead without the ball leaving the infield.
