Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, R-Utah, has sent a letter to Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings asking her to not enforce the McKinney-Vento Act for Hurricane Katrina evacuees.
The McKinney-Vento Act prevents school districts from providing a formal education to homeless children as a segregated group.
In his letter, dated Thursday, Hatch wrote, "These displaced and homeless children are not the typical homeless children. Nearly all of them are with their families. It is important to keep families together as the Katrina victims receive aid and support, including education and counseling."
Students at Camp Williams are involved in extracurricular school activities during the day. Jordan School District officials want to obtain permission to begin classes on the base.
