Contrary to the naysayers, the banning of smoking in bars and clubs will not be the end to nightlife in Salt Lake City. Having lived in Los Angeles and recently returned from a trip to New York City, I can attest to the fact that live music venues are doing quite well in those cities in spite of restrictions on smoking indoors. Clubs have simply created outside areas for people to smoke, oftentimes by just roping off an area in the front of the venue.

If the venues and entertainment are good, there will continue to be an audience, even if smokers have to step outside to light up. And nonsmokers will be able to enjoy live music without cancer risk and will not smell like an ashtray when they go home.
