A West Valley man will stand trial in the slaying of a teen last June.

During a hearing in 3rd District Court on Monday, attorneys announced the four-day trial for Gene Garza, 20, will go forward on the charge of first-degree murder.

Garza was charged last June in the shooting death of 17-year-old Guillermo Padilla in West Valley City on May 25.

The trial is expected to begin Jan. 31.

Garza is also charged in a separate case with two second-degree felony counts of aggravated assault and child abuse in an an attack on a 15-year-old girl hard enough to knock her unconscious, breaking her cheekbone and eye socket, according to police.
