Keith Sterling Trane (Coach Trane) OREM, UT Keith Sterling Trane (Coach Trane) passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on January 21, 2006. He was born in Lehi, UT on May 1, 1921, to Andrew and Gladys Southwick Trane. He married Lucille J. Harris of Layton, UT on June 16, 1943 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were married for 62 years. Keith graduated from Lehi High School in 1939 after lettering four years in basketball, track and tennis. He continued his education at Utah State University where he was an outstanding tennis and basketball athlete. He received his degree in Physical Education. He later received his master's degree from BYU. Following his undergraduate degree, he began his coaching/teaching career at Montpelier High for two years and then moved to Wasatch High in Heber for eight successful years. He then moved to Lincoln High School in Orem and eventually coached for over 25 additional years at Lincoln Jr. High and Lakeridge Jr. High in Orem. Keith initiated and headed up community recreation programs in Montpelier, Heber and Orem. He was director of summer programs for thousands of children over the years. He organized and became President of the Central Utah Tennis Association. This program affiliated ten central Utah cities with the USLTA program. He was a District Athletic Director for 12 years in YMMIA and served as President of the Utah Education Association. Keith received numerous awards for his outstanding contributions to the youth in the communities where he resided and taught. Keith received the Outstanding Tennis Coach in the Intermountain Association in 1958. The National Jaycees selected him as one of 12 outstanding physical fitness leaders in the US in 1966. He was honored at the White House by US President Johnson and received a special cash grant. He was awarded the Outstanding Educator Award in 1969 by the Orem Chamber of Commerce and later was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Old Time Athlete Coaches of Utah. He had several published articles in local and national recreation/coaching magazines and periodicals. Coach Trane retired from his formal teaching career in 1981 but continued to teach until 1992. He suffered from strokes that took his ability to physically teach on the tennis or basketball court, but continued to verbally teach individuals of all ages until his death. Keith was a dedicated and faithful member of the LDS Church and held many leadership positions. He and Lucille had the opportunity to serve a mission to the London, England Mission in 1986 As a man of great integrity and wisdom, he influenced thousands of people throughout his life. He taught everyone to find the finest measure of greatness in oneself. He always advocated for the underdog and exemplified compassion and respect for every person he met. He was a devoted family member, outstanding educator, influential coach, and loyal friend. He is survived by his wife Lucille and their five children, Terry (Brian) Long, Alpine; Randy (Risa) Trane, Idaho Falls, ID; Janice (Corey) Jones, Heber; David (Shelly) Trane, Longmont, CO; Kurtiss (Melanie) Trane, Ogden; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother Ralph (Elda) Trane, Salt Lake; and sister Delores (Arden) Sullivan, West Valley. He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Morris, Don and Glen Trane. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 27, 2006 at 12:00 noon in the LDS Lakeridge Stake Chapel, 158 E 1100 S Orem, UT. Friends and family may call on Thursday evening from 6-8:00 PM at the same location and on Friday morning from 10:30-11:45 AM, prior to the funeral.
