PROVO — A man who barricaded himself in his Orem apartment after threatening his two sons with a gun is in the Utah County Jail on $50,000 bail.
The 43-year-old man was drunk Wednesday night when he threatened to shoot his 20- and 15-year-old sons, according to Orem Police Lt. Doug Edwards.
The boys were able to escape and call police, who tried to negotiate with the man for almost two hours.
During the standoff, 10 nearby apartments were vacated, as police and the Orem-Provo Metro SWAT team tried to initiate contact.
After police fired tear gas into the apartment several times, the man finally came out, at which point officers used a Tazer to safely take the man into custody, according to a probable cause statement that Orem police filed in the 4th District Court. The man, who has a criminal history in Oregon and California, was treated for tear gas exposure, then booked into the Utah County Jail, according to Edwards. Officers found a .45-caliber pistol and a shotgun inside the home, according to court documents.
The man appeared in 4th District Court Thursday morning for a bail hearing. He is being investigated for aggravated assault, illegal possession of firearms by a convicted felon, interfering with arrest and public intoxication.
