Obituary: Betty Nelson Smith

Betty Nelson Smith 1908 ~ 2006 Betty Nelson Smith passed away January 29, 2006 from a stroke. She was born April 11, 1908 in Manti, Utah to James P. and Clara M. Nelson. She had two older sisters, Helen (Nelson) le Cheminant and Dorothy (Nelson) Severin, and a younger brother Gordon Nelson who all preceded her in death. She attended Western Women's College in Ohio. She married Comer E. Smith in Salt Lake City in 1929 and was happily married until his death 49 years later in 1978. Betty is lovingly remembered by three nieces, Lois MacHale and Shirley Hudson of California; Susan Cooper of Arkansas; nine great-nieces and nephews; as well as her devoted friends Gary and Joyce McNally and their family of Salt Lake City. Betty worked over 40 years at Equitable Life Insurance in customer service. She is a member of Radiant Chapter #12 O.E.S and P.E.O. Chapter D as well as a member of the Unitarian Church. Betty said she was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to many countries, with Hawaii being her favorite destination. Betty was a past president of the Ladies Association at Oakridge Country Club where she had been an avid golfer. She was also a former member of the Shrine Ladies and Mixed Shrine Bowling Leagues. Betty was an independent lady with a great sense of humor, qualities that have helped her through some tough times and allowed her to live her life to the fullest. The family wishes to thank all of Betty's caregivers especially Dr. Lisa Kuwahara and Betty's aid Linda Natter. Services will be held Tuesday, January 31 at 12:30 p.m. at Evans & Early Mortuary, 574 East 100 South, Salt Lake City.
