Melvin Richards Park 1919 ~ 2006 Melvin Richards Park, dear father and best friend, passed away January 2, 2006, in the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center of causes incident to age. Mel was born and raised on the Provo Bench, now known as Orem, Utah, to William S. Park and Sarah Elizabeth Mecham on March 3, 1919. He was raised and educated in Orem schools. He married Shirley Gardner of Spanish Fork in the Salt Lake Temple on October 10, 1940. Following their marriage, Mel volunteered to be drafted in the Army in the Army Air Corps serving in England repairing airplanes during World War II. Upon his returning from England, he joined his young wife in Orem. Mel worked on the family fruit orchard and retired from Geneva Steel after 30 years of service. Shirley passed away in October of 1999 just following 59 years of marriage. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a High Priest. He was a member of the Timpanogos Roadrunner Chapter of the Good Sam's R.V. Club, and enjoyed traveling and camping and square dancing with his sweetheart, Shirley. Mel was an avid reader and has enjoyed the companionship of his pet dog, Tinker, since the passing of his wife. Melvin is preceded in death by his wife, his parents and siblings, Hugh Park, LeGrand Park, Helen Hales, Fern Twitchell, Velma Jacobs, Sterling Park and Gwedolyn Crump. He is survived by his son, M. Richard of Orem/Salt Lake and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 7, 2006, at 12 noon at the Cascade Stake Center, 481 East Center, Orem. Family and friends may call Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem, and from 10:45-11:45 a.m. prior to the services at the church.
