Obituary: Susan Whittaker

Susan Whittaker 1951 ~ 2006 Our beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend passed away on Thurs., October 5, 2006 in Falls Church, Virginia from peritoneal cancer. Susan Whittaker was born on December 9, 1951 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Dale Paul and Gloria Ann Lundeberg Whittaker. Susan graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and from George Mason University with a Master's Degree in Nursing Administration. At the University of Utah she affiliated with Alpha Chi Omega. Her life's work was dedicated to Nursing. At LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City she worked as a clinical Labor and Delivery nurse, obstetrical Life Flight transport nurse, Emergency Room nurse and in Arlington, Virginia Sue worked at Tokos Clinical Services as a home health care nurse. Her professional Nursing career in Washington, D.C. included work in Senator Orrin Hatch's office on the Labor and Human Services Committee and as Associate Director, Government Affairs at American Nurses Association. Sue was a faithful and loving member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as visiting teacher, gospel doctrine teacher and in numerous Relief Society presidencies and as Relief Society President. Above all her favorite calling was Alexandria Ward Nursery leader. She will be remembered for her determination and courage, genuine love of friends, gentle and unassuming service to others, enjoyment of playing and watching tennis, skiing fresh powder, world travel, a quick wit and sense of humor, brilliant practical jokes, soft chocolate chip cookies with slivered almonds and love of an eternal family. Susan is survived by her parents Dale and Gloria Whittaker of Salt Lake City, Utah; brother Steven (Deidre) Whittaker of Salt Lake City, Utah; sister Nancy (Nicholas) Ward of Alexandria, Virginia; nephews Nowell (Carly) Whittaker, Salt Lake City, Utah; Ryan (Kristine) Whittaker of Layton, Utah; Bryce (Lisa) Whittaker of Forest Heights, Maryland; and Eric (Wendi) Whittaker of Salt Lake City, Utah. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Alexandria 1st Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2810 King Street, Alexandria, Virginia (with a viewing at 9:30 a.m.) and Saturday, October 14 at 11:00 a.m. at East Millcreek 9th Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3750 Hillside Lane, Salt Lake City, Utah (with a viewing at 9:30 a.m.). Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that contributions may be made to National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, 500 NE Spanish River Blvd., Suite 8, Boca Raton, FL 33431.
