ZION NATIONAL PARK — A Virginia man has been found after he was reported missing from a hike on the park's remote Subway trail.

A military helicopter found Tom Gerhardt, 55, of Chesapeake, about 8 p.m. Monday, said park spokesman Ron Terry. The 66th Rescue Squadron out of Nellis Air Force Base had been called in to search for the man after he didn't return from the hike.

"He had a headlamp that had a strobe on it, so he was able to flash a light and the helicopter crew saw it," Terry said Tuesday.

Rescuers took the man to the hospital, where he was treated for a dislocated shoulder.

Terry said it appears Gerhardt intended to hike the Subway trail on Saturday but he got off-route, ending up above Wildcat Canyon. He was trying to get down when he fell about 100 feet, rangers said.
