Without having to lift a finger over the weekend, the University of Utah's ninth-ranked volleyball team won its first outright Mountain West Conference championship at 23-2, 14-0 in league play.

The title assures the Utes a No. 1 seed at the MWC tournament Nov. 22-25 in Las Vegas. They will play the winner of the play-in match between the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds.

Utah won its title on Sunday night when UNLV downed Colorado State in five games. CSU dropped to a tie for second with BYU, both at 11-3 with two matches left.

This marks Utah's second MWC title as the Utes tied for the regular-season crown with Colorado State in 2004 when both finished the season 13-1.

"Winning the conference championship was one of our primary goals this season," said U. coach Beth Launiere. "I am very happy for our players because we set this goal, and we achieved it.

"We still have two matches left in the regular season, and I don't want us to let up. There have been times this season when we could have slipped and a lost a match, but we didn't let it happen. This team persevered."

Utah is at Air Force Friday and Colorado State Saturday to conclude its regular season.
