Frederick W. Smee 1919 ~ 2006 Frederick Wilson Smee passed away November 18, 2006 at the Utah State Veterans Nursing Home in Salt Lake City. Born October 13, 1919 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to George and Beulah Cameron Smee. He graduated from Lebanon Valley College in 1941 and entered the U.S. Army. He graduated from Officers Candidate School as a Second Lieutenant in 1942. He married Dorothy Lorene Coleman in 1944 and later divorced. He served in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes campaigns, and in the Battle of the Bulge under General Patton during World War II. He was awarded the Silver Star during the crossing of the Saare River in 1945, where he was critically wounded and also awarded the Purple Heart. Fred served his country for over 22 years in the Army in various stations around the world. He was also an avid Scouter and received the Silver Beaver award in 1962. He retired from the military as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1963 and moved to Salt Lake City. He married Mary Louise Bush Atwood in 1968. They were sealed in the Bountiful LDS Temple in 2003. Fred was an expert sportsman, and went on various fishing and hunting excursions with family and friends. After the military, he worked for Deseret Test Center and Dugway Proving Ground as a civilian employee until 1975. For nearly 20 years he and Mary spent six months each year in Mexico. He is survived by his wife Mary; and children Suzanne Rockstead (Clifford); James Smee (Suzanne); Donald Smee (Georgia); William Atwood (Debra); Martin Atwood (Lisa); David Atwood (Debra); Thomas Lee Greenland; 16 grand-children; three great-grandchildren; and brother, George H. Smee. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. at the East Millcreek LDS Stake Center, 3103 E. 3600 South. Viewing will be on Friday evening from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 E. 1300 South, and again on Saturday from 12:15-1:15 p.m. at the stake center.
