OREM — The Utah Valley State women's soccer team lost 3-1 Friday to South Dakota State on penalty kicks in the semifinals of the United Soccer Conference tournament in Washington, D.C.

The defeat, which came in a penalty shootout following 80 minutes of scoreless regulation and an additional 20 of overtime with nary a goal, ended the season for the Wolverines (8-11-1).

"It was a good game," Utah Valley State coach Brent Anderson said. "This is just a tough way to lose a game. Our defenders played well and were good under pressure all game — they didn't allow any clean shots on goal."

The shootout lasted only three shots. UVSC sophomore Jenni Wright hit her team's first shot, but Wolverine midfielders Courtney Robbins and Megan Berrett missed theirs. Meanwhile, the Jackrabbits converted all three of their kicks to clinch the victory.

UVSC defeated Delaware State 2-1 on Thursday to advance to the semifinals. Chelsea Stone and Robbins scored within five minutes of each other in the second half to help the Wolverines overcome an early one-goal deficit.
