Harold K. Winter "Grumpy" Harold Karl Winter, 92, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on December 24, 2006 of causes incident to age. He was born on Oct. 3, 1914 to Karl and Ethel Armantrout Winter in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from West High School and attended the University of Utah. Harold married his sweetheart, Ruth Cave, Feb. 14, 1939 in Ogden, Utah. A veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theatre with the 16th Armored Division. Upon his return to Salt Lake in 1946, he rejoined his family business, Karl Winter Company, and was active in the automotive industry until his retirement at age 88. He served on the Board of Directors for the Pacific Automotive Show, and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for his service to the industry. Harold enjoyed golf and friends. He and Ruth were active members of the Hidden Valley Country Club and the Ambassador Athletic Club. Grumpy was the ultimate gentleman, standing when a lady entered the room and opening doors. He thanked each person that offered even the smallest kindness to him. More than anything else, Grumpy loved his family. Greetings with Grumpy always included a kiss. No family member left without knowing he loved him or her and a big hug to last until "next time." Grumpy loved Christmas, making homemade eggnog and surprising people with gifts gave him great pleasure. Harold is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth; son, Richard H. (Nancy) Winter; daughter, Kathryn (Allen) Schutz; grandchildren, Cynthia Solis, Rebecca Winter, Christopher Winter, Kevin Schutz, Kristine Schutz, Kimberly Schutz; and nine great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his sister, Karline. The family wishes to express gratitude to those who served Grumpy with great care and gentleness over the last few years. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 30th at Noon at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 Highland Dr., Salt Lake City, Utah. A viewing will be held on Friday, Dec. 29th from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the services on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.
