A man was charged with child abuse after he admitted picking up his child too abruptly and breaking 13 of her ribs.

Documents filed in 3rd District Court on Tuesday state the 18-year-old father told police that on Dec. 11 he became frustrated with his 1-month-old daughter and "may have picked her up too hard." He also said he heard her ribs crack.

A physician at Primary Children's Medical Center examined the baby and determined she had 13 broken ribs and a broken leg, as stated in court documents. The injuries are said to have been caused by nonaccidental squeezing and shaking of the child.
