First Night events across the state will be seeing changes this year.
The most noticeable of the changes will be two cities changing their events to Saturday night, rather than Sunday Dec. 31.
Both Provo and St. George will be celebrating untraditionally in hopes of attracting more families.
"Some people say this is the party before the party," said Gary Sanders, community arts administrator for St. George. "We feel we will get a better attendance."
Given the demographics of the community in Provo, that city's committee felt it would have better success holding the event on Saturday.
"We want everyone to be able to enjoy this activity," said Scott Henderson, assistant director of the Provo Parks and Recreation.
And families will not have to worry about weather this year. Provo will also be moving its New Year's celebration, "Pathway to the Stars" indoors to the Provo Towne Centre Mall.
There will be a First Night Star competition, in a format similar to "American Idol." Many other interactive activities are also planned for people to be involved in during the night.
"We are creating stars of the people who show up," Henderson said.
In Ogden, the Treehouse Museum will have a Family New Year's Eve Party on Saturday.
Instead of keeping the children up late, they will count down to noon. There will be hat making, a magic show and other activities.
Kaysville simply canceled its New Year's Eve event because the holiday falls on Sunday.
Salt Lake City will still hold its event on Sunday with one minor change: All of the events will be at the Gallivan Center.
"We thought rather than compromise the quality of the project, we would put it all in one area," said Andrew Wallace, marketing and development manager with the Downtown Alliance.
Wallace recognizes that attendance may be smaller but hopes the activities will draw people out of their homes.
The most popular draw of the night is the Wells Fargo fireworks finale that goes off at midnight. It is one of the only First Night events in the county to have fireworks, Wallace said.
Before the fireworks, people will be able to enjoy bands like deSol, ice skating and many other acts. DJ Jluuv will kick off the night at 6 p.m.
St. George will have events in several places in the downtown historic district starting at 7 p.m.
There will be three outdoor stages on 100 South, a classic car show and many art vendors.
Organizers have called on the Kokopelli to help celebrate the New Year.
People will be able to write what they would have, could have and should have done. At the end of the night the fire department will light up the papers and people will be able to watch all their regrets go up into flames, Sanders said.
