Jubal A. Hale 1928 ~ 2006 Jubal Anderson Hale, a devoted father and former federal official died December 25 from natural causes. He was 78 years old. Born June 12, 1928 in Salt Lake City, Hale was the son of the late Lael Irvine and Jubal Anderson Early Hale, who served for decades as vice president of Utah Power and Light. Hale attended the University of Utah, where he received both his B.A. and J.D., and he served in the Utah National Guard. After working in private practice as a lawyer, he served in the Utah Attorney General's office and, subsequently, the Depart of Interior (the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Board of Review and the Bureau of Land Management). Married briefly to the late Margaret R. "Peggy" Sullivan in the early 1960's, with whom Hale had one child, Mary Jane Hale, now a Senior Engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado. From horses to mathematics, he often initiated and always encouraged his daughter's interests and pursuits. He was also a potent and imaginative influence in the life of Sullivan's older daughter, Meg Sullivan, a Los Angeles publicist. In retirement, Hale pursued various interests, including art collecting, classical music, thoroughbred horses and politics. Throughout his life Hale was buoyed by the generosity and devotion of a group of friends, many of whom he'd known since childhood: Sid Baucom, Gregory Skedros, Leland Cowan and the late Utah Supreme Court Justice Frank Wilkins. Survivors include younger sister, Joann Vuylsteke, a retired French teacher in Alameda, Ca; her husband Joel VuylstekeL and their son Bill Vuylsteke. Larkin Mortuary is handling arrangements, which do not include a funeral service.
