Park City's Brett Camerota, 21, finished in 38th place out of a field of 49 in the first nordic combined competition of the Torino Olympics at the Pragelota venue.
Camerota was chosen as the fourth member of the U.S. team for Saturday's individual event, ahead of his twin brother, Eric, who is expected to compete later in the Games.
Camerota was in 33rd place after the ski jumping portion of the competition with distances of 90 and 90.5 meters off the normal hill. He faded slightly in the 15-kilometer cross country ski race that followed.
Germany's Georg Hettich won the gold medal after placing first in jumping and 18th in cross country. Austrian Felix Gottwald won silver, and Norwegian Magnus Moan won bronze.
Other U.S. finishers were Todd Lodwick in eighth place, Billy Demong in 15th and Johnny Spillane in 30th.
Camerota, a three-time Junior World Championship qualifier, competed in his first World Cup event Jan. 29 in Seefeld, Austria, where he placed 28th in the individual.
