So which country is having the most successful Olympics? Depends how you define success. Norway has the most medals with 13, but only one of them is gold. Germany, Russia and Canada have won 11 medals. The United States has 10 and the most golds with six.

Ohno back on ice

Four years ago, a massive pileup in Salt Lake City left four skaters sprawled on the ice. Apolo Anton Ohno was one of them, but he managed to crawl across the line for a silver medal.

The American star hopes to stay on his skates in today's 1,000 meters — but there are no guarantees. Ohno will have to contend with South Korea's Ahn Hyun-Soo and Lee Ho-Suk, each going for their second medals of these games. Ahn won gold and Lee earned silver in the 1,500 — where Ohno stumbled and failed to advance.

World record holder Li Jiajun of China — who started the chain of events in 2002 and won bronze in the 1,500 last week — is in the field, along with Fabio Carta of Italy. Carta and Ahn were in the race four years ago.

Ohno will skate in the same four-man opening heat as Ahn, with the top two advancing to the semifinals. The other American, Rusty Smith, is in the same heat as Li Ye, the man Ohno got too close to in the 1,500.
