OREM — The City Council has tightened rules on when burials can be made in the city's cemetery and how long decorations may remain on graves.

The number of holidays when interments or disinterments are prohibited will be extended to include all city-observed holidays, said Orem public works director Bruce Chesnut.

In addition, no Sunday burials will be allowed.

Cemetery workers will be able to remove decorations from grave sites one week after a holiday.

The changes are in keeping with the policies of other communities, Chesnut said.

Councilwoman Karen McCandless said some residents may mistakenly believe that if items are elaborate, or large and heavy, the city will store them, but that is not the case.

Items cleared from grave sites will be discarded, she said.
