Lee Benson (Feb. 18) should have done his homework. It will come as a surprise to the Venetians, Milanese, Tuscans, Napoletani and the Sicilians, not to mention other Italians, that their peninsula was ruled by the House of Savoy for more than 1,000 years, as Benson writes. The House of Savoy only ruled Italy from 1866/1870 to 1946, a little more than a hundred years. The acceptance of the Savoyard king as king of Italy was a compromise, which many democrats and republicans fighting for the unification of Italy later greatly regretted. Without question, Torino is a beautiful, regal and fascinating city, but let's get our facts straight.
