I am concerned about the impact of proposed legislation that would restrict high school student access to clubs which might be organized around issues of sexual orientation. As a school psychologist, it has been my experience that students with these issues need to have a source of adult guidance and supervision. Research shows they are at a much higher risk for harassment, depression, suicide, substance abuse, etc. The presence of an adult who can monitor these issues and provide a context for appropriate guidance when needed is critical. This need to protect adolescents exists regardless of one's view of sexual orientation. Many parents would not necessarily support their teen's affiliation with the GLB community but would also not want their child to endure relentless harassment and engage in self-destructive behavior.
Politicians attempting to score points with a narrow ultra-conservative constituency or promote their own moral agenda should rethink their position on this one.
