Brent Wood Gibson 1921 ~ 2006 HURRICANE, UTAH - Brent Wood Gibson, age 84, passed away peacefully at home with Joyce, his loving wife, by his side on Tuesday, January 31, 2006. He was born June 22, 1921 in Hurricane, Utah to George Wood and Jessie Helen Jennings Gibson. He married Joyce Webb on January 11, 1946 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were sealed to each other and their children in the Salt Lake Temple on their tenth anniversary in 1956. This past month they quietly celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Dad was a veteran of World War II. He worked for the Post Office for 29 years, where everyone called him Hoot. During their years on 700 East, Dad always planted and cared for a huge vegetable garden, while Mom and the rest of us helped with the harvest. He played on a Monday morning bowling league for years with friends who worked the night shift with him at the post office. After retirement in 1986, he and Mom moved to Hurricane. They loved their years in Southern Utah. Dad finally had room for his shop; he cut wood for Relief Society projects all over Washington County and made numerous items for friends and family, including hope chests for his granddaughters. He was able to restore the '27 Dodge he had kept for so long and proudly drove it in county parades. They also got a pool table, and he loved playing (and beating) all comers. Dad had a sense of humor and always enjoyed telling and hearing a good joke - the cornier, the better. Dad was a true jack-of-all-trades. Whether it involved bicycles, automobiles, building his and Mom's first home, his woodshop, or forever helping family and friends, he could do it. He served as ward clerk for 15 years under five bishops, willingly fulfilled assignments at the Stake Welfare farm for many years, and served two years at the St. George Temple with Mom. Family has been Dad and Mom's first priority, and they have always been there when we needed them. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; children, Dennis (Sue), Norman, Nancy Jensen (Bruce), Brad, Terri Sims (Paul), and Marietta Denetclaw (Ken); 24 grandchildren; 15 great-grand-children; and brothers, Mads and Winston. He was preceded in death by a baby boy, David; his parents; and siblings Malon, Laurel, Phyllis, Nedra, and Inez. The funeral will be held at the Hurricane 5th Ward, 274 South 100 West on Saturday, February 4 at 12 p.m. A viewing will be held at Hurricane Valley Mortuary, 140 N. Main Street on Friday, February 3 from 6-8 p.m. and at the chapel from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will take place at Hurricane City Cemetery, Hurricane, UT. Arrangements are made under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George, UT (435)673-2454.
