The diversity chairs on Weber State University's Student Senate are safe for now after a 12-6 vote to keep them as is.

A plan sponsored by Student Senator Chris Ross would have replaced the Ogden school's nine minority-specific seats with four generic minority spots. It would have retained eight seats for college-specific senators and one each for nontraditional students, undeclared majors and students on the Davis Campus. The four diversity chairs would then represent all nine subcategories of minorities on campus, including disabled students, ethnic minorities and veterans.

The diversity seats were created nearly 23 years ago after communications professor Richard Sline noticed the homogenous student government.
