Former Salt Lake County chief financial officer Randy Joseph Allen pleaded guilty Monday to a single count of misdemeanor communications fraud for misusing his county-issued gas card.

Immediately after the guilty plea, 3rd District Judge Stephen Henroid sentenced Allen to 12 months of court-supervised probation and a $350 fine, which Allen paid in full following Monday's hearing. The judge waived the 180-day jail sentence possible under a class B misdemeanor.

Allen resigned from his $103,776 a year position in May 2004 amid reports he used his county-issued vehicle twice to haul his boat to Lake Powell. The fraud charge, however, stems from the inappropriate use of his gas card, not the trips.

After resigning from the CFO position, Allen became a fiscal analyst for the county's planning and development services and engineering divisions.
