SOUTH JORDAN — A small meth lab bust turned into a major SWAT operation Tuesday when a man holed himself up in the attic of a South Jordan home.

Police were assisting the Drug Enforcement Administration in serving a warrant at a Draper home believed to be housing a methamphetamine laboratory. The rental occupants, who were not home at the time, were traced to the South Jordan home, near 10500 South and 3000 West.

When police arrived at the home about 9 a.m., a woman turned herself in but did not say whether her boyfriend was inside, said South Jordan Police Sgt. Dan Starks.

Tear gas was used in an attempt to evacuate the residence. The SWAT team was then called in.

Search dogs eventually found a 36-year-old man in the attic. Following a scuffle with one of the dogs, the man and the dog fell through the ceiling of the home, Starks said.
