A Salt Lake man allegedly claiming to be a Rhode Island police officer in Fashion Place Mall was arrested Monday by Murray police.

The 25-year-old man was trying on shirts inside one of the department stores when an employee noticed he had a gun in a holster on his hip, said Murray Police Sgt. Doug Roberts.

The man said he was a police officer from a department in Rhode Island and went on to tell the woman how he drove a patrol car and that he could arrest people, he said.

The woman was not totally satisfied with the answer, however, and found an off-duty officer working store security.

"When the officer asked for ID, the man became belligerent with him and wouldn't give him any," Roberts said.

Upon further investigation, police learned the man did have a concealed weapons permit in Utah and worked with a district attorney in Rhode Island but in an administrative role and had no arresting powers at all.

The man was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of impersonating an officer.
