Lawyers for Salt Lake City and Rowland Hall St. Mark's private school have placed restrictions on 13 acres, at roughly 800 South and 1400 East, that the school wants to buy from the Mt. Olivet cemetery for future expansion.
The development agreement would require Rowland Hall to dedicate at least 25 percent of the 13 acres to open space and maintain a trail between Sunnyside Avenue and the cemetery along the western edge of the property. It also would require that the school pay the city $100,000 for a traffic study. Neighbors have objected to the project because they say it would increase congestion on their streets.
The Salt Lake City Council still must approve the agreement, which is a compromise between the school and the city in exchange for the city rezoning the land to eventually allow an upper and middle school campus. A vote is scheduled for next Tuesday.
