VERNAL — The investigation into the death this past month of a 1-year-old Ballard girl has been closed, the Uintah County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday.

Sheriff's Lt. Robert Roth said an autopsy performed by the state medical examiner's office determined that Jakoya Kelly Kimball choked to death. Investigators had been awaiting toxicology results before deciding whether to continue their inquiry into the toddler's death.

"We just wanted to make sure no red flags came back from toxicology, and none did," he said. "It's been ruled accidental."

Roth said he did not know what the toddler choked on.

On March 22, Kimball was brought to the Uintah Basin Medical Center's emergency room by her mother's boyfriend. She was not breathing and had a small bump on her head. Roth said the man told the medical staff that Kimball had fallen from her high chair.
