PROVO — The Utah County Health Department's Garden of Hope, an annual event of free clinics, displays and prizes for women ages 40-64, runs today and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Health and Justice Building, 151 S. University Avenue.
During the event, the health department will honor Virginia Van Patten, Lynn Flinders and the late Ann Rawlings — three women who UCHD program manager Jackie Evans-Black says "incorporate the very essence of the Garden of Hope event."
Van Patten twice has been diagnosed with breast cancer and "continues to support others by her example and strength," Black said.
Flinders, UCHD's nursing director, has been cancer-free for a little more than a year after successful breast-cancer treatment. She is a strong advocate of regular breast exams, Black said.
Rawlings, who worked with people recovering from drug addictions, died last year after a third battle with breast cancer.
Free services available to women ages 40-64 at the event include skin cancer checks, blood sugar and oxygen level tests, blood pressure checks, body mass index, diet and exercise information, colon cancer information and hand massages.
Fasting cholesterol tests, by appointment, will be offered for $20, and bone density checks will be available for $5. Women may also qualify for clinical breast exams ($15), pap smear and pelvic exams ($15) or free mammography vouchers. For information or to schedule an appointment, call 851-7031 or 851-7045.
