WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Head coach Elaine Elliott has announced the signing of Halie Sawyer (Panguitch) to a national letter of intent. Sawyer, a 6-foot-1 forward, was the top player in 1A for the past two seasons. She averaged more than 20 points per game for Panguitch High last season, leading the Bobcats to their second consecutive 1A championship.

TENNIS: The BYU men's tennis team beat Utah 5-2 Thursday. The Cougars improve to 10-15 overall and 3-1 in conference. The loss drops the Utes to 13-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Brigham Young

TRACK AND FIELD: The Cougars will be home for the Easter weekend when they host the Y Invitational at Clarence F. Robison Track on Saturday.

The entire men and women's teams will be home for the event. Other participating schools include: Eastern Washington, Portland State, Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley State, Weber State and Western State. The competition will begin at 11 a.m. with the women's hammer throw and the final event will be completed at approximately 5:30 p.m. The event is $2 for students and faculty, $3 for individuals and $10 for families. Athletes under the age of 14 can enter free with uniform.

SOFTBALL: Freshman shortstop Andrea Ramirez has been named Mountain West Conference player of the week for her performance against in-state foes Utah and Utah State. Ramirez batted .750 (6 for 8) with two home runs as BYU went 3-1 last week. On Thursday, an offensive explosion led by Ianeta Lei, propelled BYU to a doubleheader sweep over New Mexico, 11-1 and 12-10. The Cougars (26-14, 6-2 MWC) have now won three games in a row and five of their last six. BYU remains on the road as it travels to Fort Collins to take on Colorado State in a Saturday doubleheader.

TENNIS: The BYU women's tennis team made quick work of its opponent Friday, beating Wyoming 7-0 in the first of three conference matches this week. The Cougars are now 16-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The Cougars meet Colorado State in Colorado Springs and begins at 10 a.m.

BASEBALL: A seventh-inning solo homer by Jeff Hiestand wasn't enough for BYU as Washington's pitching stymied BYU with 20 strikeouts in a 10-1 loss Thursday. The Cougars didn't get a run on the board against the Huskies until Hiestand's homer agaist Washington reliever Nick Haughian. The hot-hitting Cougar collected his second home home run in as many games and his fifth of the season. With the loss BYU falls to 14-19 while Washington improves to 23-13.

Utah State

BASKETBALL: Senior forward Nate Harris, the school's all-time leader in field-goal percentage at 64.1 percent, was drafted by the Dodge City Legend in the fourth round of the 2006 United States Basketball League (USBL) Draft conducted on April 11. The eight-team USBL begins play for the 2006 season on April 21.

FOOTBALL: Members of Utah State's football team and staff will be at six different locations in Logan handing out information about the upcoming season this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. The Aggies, who conclude spring practice with a short scrimmage from 7:30-8 p.m. on Friday, will be at Albertson's, the Cache Valley Mall Food Court, Macey's, Smith's, Smith's Marketplace and Wal Mart. Players will be available to talk about the upcoming season, while handing out schedule cards and ticket brochures.

Also, Utah State head football coach Brent Guy and assistants are hosting a football clinic for women 18 and over to learn football skills and techniques at Romney Stadium on Wednesday, April 19th. Admission is free, and registration will begin at 6 p.m. at the door. The clinic will run from 6:30-8 p.m. For more information, call (435) 797-1850.

Southern Utah

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Southern Utah interim head women's basketball coach Tony Giannotti announced Wednesday the signing of Utah prep star Aubrey Mackintosh to a national letter of intent to play for the Thunderbirds next season. Mackintosh, a 5-foot-10 guard from Brighton High, was a first-team all-state selection this year after averaging 14.0 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals a game.

TRACK AND FIELD: Southern Utah University outdoor track and field athlete Brian Majors was named Mid-Continent Conference men's athlete of the week for his performances last Saturday at the Weber State Invitational in Ogden. The award marks the second-straight week a T-Bird track athlete has been honored by the conference office.

GOLF: Kenny Ebalo has been named this week's Mid-Continent Conference player of the week for men's golf. Ebalo, a senior from Las Vegas, finished fourth at Wyoming's Cowboy Classic this week at 2-under par 208.

TENNIS: Southern Utah avenged a pair of preseason losses to Oakland University when it counted Thursday as the Thunderbirds topped the Golden Grizzlies 4-3 in the T-Birds' conference opener. Freshman Emmi Nelson, playing in her first collegiate match, beat Oakland's Jessica Erickson, 6-2, 6-2, to seal the victory.

Weber State

TRACK AND FIELD: Weber State junior Jamie Stubbs has been named the Big Sky women's outdoor track athlete of the week, after her performance last week at the Wildcat Invitational in Ogden. The West Haven native won the 800 meters at the WSU home meet with a career-best time of 2:11.42. Also, Weber State has signed distance runner Cassie Ricks (Fremont High) to a national letter of intent.

VOLLEYBALL: Volleyball coach Al Givens has announced the signings of two players to compete for Weber State this fall. Givens has signed Karlie Porter from Provo and Amy Dunford from Kaysville to join the Wildcats.
