I hope members of the Salt Lake City Council will look 20 years down the road before voting in favor of the rezone for the Mount Olivet property. In 20 years, the municipal cemetery will be sold out of lots, and Mount Olivet will still have 36 years to go on the lease with the Salt Lake School District for the land beneath East High's football stadium. In the meantime, the city's Catholic and Jewish cemeteries are already tight for space, Salt Lake Memorial Mausoleum and Larkin Sunset Lawn are small and won't be able to serve the city's burial needs.
Salt Lake City needs every acre of cemetery space it has for the future.
