South Jordan planners and officials want your help in boosting arts — and it doesn't matter whether you have experience or even live in South Jordan.

The city is taking applications for membership on its new Public Arts & Cultural Development Board, created last July by the City Council to oversee South Jordan's arts programs, including dance, theater and music, as well as art exhibits and architectural standards.

"We encourage anyone to apply, whether they're professional or layman," deputy recreation director Heath Bateman said. "If they have interest in the beauty of the city, they are encouraged to apply."

The board will have about 16 members, and applicants are being considered from all walks of life, Bateman said. The only requirement is that the board's majority be South Jordan residents. Other than that, the city hopes to have a mix of people who are professional artists and those who just have an interest, and of people with experience in public service and those who want to get involved for the first time.

The board will advise the Planning Commission on such things as architectural standards of new buildings. It will also have the final say in deciding which groups get to share in nearly $30,000 to be doled out annually for art programs, theater groups, exhibits and other events.

The application process is now open, and there is no application deadline. Board members will be appointed to two-year terms by the City Council, likely in May. They will be expected to attend all regular meetings, held monthly and on some special occasions.

Anyone interested in applying should pick up an application at the office of city recorder Anna West, 1600 W. Towne Center Drive. For more information, contact Lori Edmunds, special events assistant, at (801) 254-3742.
