UVSC/BYU
BASEBALL: A rematch between BYU and Utah Valley State College's baseball teams is Tuesday at 7 p.m., but it is the first time the Wolverines will play this season at Larry H. Miller Field.
UVSC brings a 12-26 record into Tuesday's game, while the Cougars are 15-20. BYU has a 6-3 record at home this season.
The Cougars won last week at UVSC, 8-6. The Cougar-Wolverine game is the first of four this week for BYU at Miller Park. BYU hosts TCU in a three-game series beginning Thursday at 7 p.m. Friday's BYU-TCU game will also be televised live by KBYU and BYUTV.
Southern Utah
BASEBALL: At Cedar City, SUU won its second consecutive series to open Mid-Continent Conference play, but needed late-inning heroics to pull off two of its wins in a marathon Saturday afternoon at Thunderbird Park. SUU (20-13, 6-2 Mid-Con) claimed a 6-5, eight-inning victory in the rain-suspended second game of the series to open the day, while Centenary (15-21, 3-5) broke through in the series with a 7-4 triumph in the first game of Saturday's regularly scheduled twin bill. The Thunderbirds then clinched the series win with a 4-3 decision in the seven-inning finale, scoring all four runs in their final at-bat.
SOFTBALL: At Macomb, Ill., league-leading Southern Utah ran its Mid-Continent Conference softball record to 10-2 Saturday by completing a sweep of a four-game series against second-place Western Illinois. The Thunderbirds took a 5-3 decision in 11 innings in Game 1, then rolled to an 8-0 win in the series finale. SUU improved to 18-27 overall while WIU dropped to 15-25, 8-7 in league play. Western Illinois took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 and held it until Rodeo Carli scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to tie it at 1-1. Kortny Hall set up the SUU victory, however, singling with the bases loaded in the top of the 11th. The Thunderbirds erupted for eight runs in the second inning of Game 2. Corie Jensen took it from there, scattering three hits and holding the Westerwinds scoreless.
Utah State
SOFTBALL: At Ruston, La., Quela Leonhardt went 4 of 7 in a doubleheader against Louisiana Tech on Saturday, but Utah State could not pull out a victory, getting swept by Louisiana Tech. Utah State (5-30, 0-8) failed to pick up its first-ever conference win. Leonhardt recorded two hits in both of the games on Saturday to extend her on-base streak to 17 games and her hitting streak to seven. Leonhardt has hit .476 with 10 hits during her current seven-game hitting streak. The Aggies will now return home after 10 straight games on the road to take on BYU in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
Utah
TRACK: The University of Utah track and field team wrapped up competition of several meets. Amanda Feigt obtained an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the heptathlon.
Feigt, tallying 5,081 points (12th) in the heptathlon, provisionally qualified for the NCAA's at the Mt. SAC relays. Among other highlights at Mt. Sac, Nicki Hugie and Janett Ern competed in the 1,500-meter run. Ern finished with a time of 4:44.11, and Hugie finished 4:47.30. AJ Roby finished fourth in the discus (149-03). In Thursday's events, the pole vaulters all cleared 11-5.75 feet but due to weather issues did not jump on Friday as scheduled.
