The Viewmont-Davis boys soccer rivalry is about to get even bigger.
That's because the longtime rivals have been selected to play at Rice-Eccles Stadium on May 6, part of a double-header with Real Salt Lake.
"We feel obviously like it's an awesome opportunity for our kids," said Viewmont coach Casey Layton.
Tickets for the Saturday double-header are available through the main office of both schools. Viewmont is tentatively scheduled to play Davis in a crucial Region 1 match at 3:30 p.m. before Real takes on the Columbus Crew later in the evening. Tickets cost $16 and are good for both games.
The Davis County rivals have played in front of some huge crowds over the years, and both programs are hoping that the large fan support will translate to Rice-Eccles Stadium.
"I just think it's going to draw a lot of people," said Layton, adding he hopes the game can help showcase the sport at the high-school level.
Davis and Viewmont are currently tied atop the Region 1 table, and the May 6 game, which is near the end of the league schedule, could potentially determine the region champion.
Viewmont's main office can be reached at 801-402-4200, and Davis' main office can be reached at 801-402-8800.
DIXIE FLYING: With three games remaining, the Dixie Flyers are in perfect position to capture the Region 9 title and are enjoying an outstanding season.
Dixie (9-3 overall, 7-0 in region) can clinch a share of the league championship with a win over Snow Canyon tonight. Should rival Pine View also lose to Cedar today, the Flyers would clinch the title outright.
They've been led offensively by striker Travis Del Toro, who has 10 goals this season. At the other end, goalie Andrew Reading has four shutouts.
TWO JAYHAWKS TOP SCORING CHARTS: With boys prep soccer starting to approach the postseason, a pair of St. Joseph stars lead the race to be the state's leading scorer.
Through 11 games, midfielder Colter Gilliland and striker Giuseppe Cuminetti both have 16 goals for St. Joseph, which is tops in the state.
Provo forward Sean Aslett leads 4A scorers with 13 strikes, while Jordan sophomore Jake Hustedt leads the way in 5A with 11 goals.
AND WHAT ABOUT SHUTOUTS? Michael Chesler of Mountain View leads the race for most shutouts in the state with seven.
Highland's Bewar Yousif and Olympus' Dustin Jensen are tied for the lead in Class 4A with four, while St. Joseph's Mark Howerton leads 3A with six.
